Hi, I’m Alex McCoy
I’m jokingly known as the ‘Can Do Hero’ here at Mouse’s Garden, which means I pretty much do anything maintenance related. I helped create the nursery site, and build any kind of furniture or toys that my wife, Flo, requests to help bring her vision to life.
You’ll always find me somewhere on-site. I open and pack down the nursery at the start and end of the day, deliver the meals that our amazing chef, Sophie, cooks fresh from the farm, and help devise activities for the children to learn how to make and mend things.
I’m a big believer in helping children feel confident to try new things, and feel secure in their own abilities. I love getting the kids involved, teaching them basic carpentry skills that will hopefully stay with them for the rest of their lives.
I have always felt that any undertaking should be carried out as thoroughly and safely as possible, and if any learning can be taken out or given from it, then even better. From handling tools, to figuring out how to fix things, and helping create or repair something, the joy and clear sense of achievement it gives to children is incredible to see.
I grew up in Purton, and spent more than 12 years working at Purton House Organics. During this time I taught myself carpentry work, and went on to gain extensive experience building various projects ranging from sculpting and relief to large structures on domestic and industrial landscapes.
I then decided to join the Navy, and spent four years working as a Weapons Engineer managing communication systems and onboard platforms. It was challenging and exciting work, but it also kept me at sea for months at a time. So when I became a dad for the second time, I knew I couldn’t spend any more time away from my family.
I’m married to Flo, co-founder of Mouse’s Garden, and we have two amazing daughters together. We’re surrounded by family and friends here in Coleshill, and love raising our girls to appreciate the things in life that really matter - living well, loving well, and treading lightly on the planet.
When I’m not working I like to spend any free time I manage to get in my workshop. I’ve always got various wood working or metal projects on the go, and enjoy teaching myself new skills. But more than anything, I just love being with my girls. It’s where I’m at my happiest.
